Jonas Mekas developed the practice of the filmed diary, which consisted of recording moments from his daily life. From these records, Mekas composed diary-films, works conceived with the purpose of being shown in the context of a public screening. Using excerpts from the filmmaker's interviews and films, as well as research by the likes of David E. James (1989; 1992) and Jeffrey Ruoff (1992), this article seeks to ascertain the methods used by Jonas Mekas to edit his film diary in the form of diary films.
