We analyze how the images of deviant individuals are constructed in the 1989 film Drugstore Cowboy, by American filmmaker Gus Van Sant, thinking about highlighting an anti-melodramatic cinematic discourse constructed in counterpoint to a classic melodramatic structure. We adopted a film analysis that sought to highlight the evidence of a dissident discourse that put into perspective the impossibilities of melodramatic representations in dialoguing with the policies adopted on drug consumption in the context of the Reagan Era (1981-1989) in the United States.
