Luís Fellipe’s critical reading of the Trilogy of Mourning

The book “Meu ato criminoso é realizar filmes”: a construção do narrador na Trilogia do Luto, de Cristiano Burlan, written by Luís Fellipe, published in 2024 by Multifoco Publishing, examines how grief and loss shape the construction of the narrator in Burlan's films Construção (2006), Mataram meu irmão (2013) and Elegia de um crime (2018). The author hypothesizes that Burlan’s films do not merely document personal pain but also reinvent the role of the narrator in the cinematic essay. Through a methodological approach based on film analysis and theoretical insights from Walter Benjamin and Theodor Adorno, the author investigates how subjectivity and narrative fragmentation affect the emotional experience of the audience. The results indicate that Burlan's films transcend the traditional boundaries of documentary filmmaking, creating a hybrid form of art that blurs the lines between fiction and reality. The book concludes that Burlan’s trilogy of mourning positions the narrator as a mediator of individual and collective experiences of grief, promoting new forms of emotional engagement, and critical reflection on memory and mourning.
