Broadcast of Brazilian Feminist Videos in the 1980s
A case study of television series Feminino Plural

The 1980s can be considered a very important period for the technical and artistic development of video in Brazil, but the production of feminist videos during this decade has so far received little research attention, especially regarding its circulation. With this article, we intend to add to recent efforts to make this videography visible and analyzable, and to strengthen this approach using the television series Feminino plural (1986) as a case study. The series, which included participation from video-makers of the pioneering feminist collective Lilith Vídeo throughout its development, is considered a milestone in Brazilian feminist video because it aired its five episodes on free-to-air television, addressing themes about women that were still little explored at the time. By reviewing the literature and analyzing the film and newspaper articles from the time, we first present the context in which it was made. Next, we look at its content. Finally, we discuss the scope and limits of its circulation at the time, which helps us to understand the past and the challenges posed in the present.
