Directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, Detropia is a documentary that explores Detroit’s modern ruins some years after the economic recession in 2008 that affected several cities around the world. Far from its “Golden Age”, Detroit is portrayed in Detropiaas a city that was once booming, but now embodies the impossibility of the (contemporary) American Dream. Thus, the documentary films spaces that used to be magnificent, but are now representations of absence and presence, but also of faith because of its inhabitants. While some prefer to leave, others choose to stay in an attempt to recover the city by any means necessary. This article looks at how Detropiaexplores the city of Detroit, its multiple visions, possibilities and contradictions by employing theoretical approaches that analyze the relationship between city, cinema and modern ruins.
