Vincente Minnelli between melodrama and musical film

Based on the ideas of Thomas Elsaesser, I locate the musical film Gigi (1958) in Vincente Minnelli's filmography. Produced after a sequence of melodramas that were filmed during the 1950s, the film replaces the usual optimism of the director’s previous musicals with the pessimism of the dramas. Proceeding with brief cartography of Minnelli’s works in the period and a deeper analysis of the film, I notice that Gigi is a musical strongly influenced by melodramatic dispositions, arguing that, in the context of its filmmaker’s oeuvre, it is a musical film revised by the melodramas that preceded it.
