Abstract

The representation of historical figures has been present in cinema since its invention. The Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890), one of the most prominent artists in the West, had his biography brought to the screen in different periods of the 20th and 21st centuries. At the beginning of the 21st century, the biopic, At Eternity’s Gate (2018), written and directed by Julian Schnabel, was released, which portrays the last two years of the painter’s life with an immersive approach to his mental disorders and artistic production. In this research, the representation of Vincent Van Gogh in the film At Eternity’s Gate (2018) will be analyzed, reflecting how biographical discoveries and cinematographic language reflect the 21st century imagination about the Dutch painter. As a theoretical basis for the analysis on the biography, studies by Levi (1989), Bourdieu (1996), Markendorf (2013) among others will be presented.
