Absent images and remembrance in David Perlov's diaries

The film Diary 1973-1983 (1983), a documentary by David Perlov (1930-2003), presents moments in the filmmaker's life over the course of a decade, living with his family in Tel Aviv, where he worked as a film director and university professor, and also occasionally traveling to other cities in and around Israel, as well as to Europe and Brazil. The film consists of six parts of 55 minutes each, in which the artist's private daily life, in the intimacy of his home, and the public dynamics of cities and their socio-political contexts are interwoven. This essay investigates the absent images triggered by the voice-over in excerpts from the first part of the work, which refers to the period from 1973 to 1977. The absent images are related to the “out-of-field” (Aumont, 2004) of the documentary and seem to signal the processes of remembrance of the narrator. It is interesting to reflect on the work of these images, what they don't reveal and the relationships they establish with other images and memories.
