The female characters in the film O jardim das espumas (1970)

This work proposes an analysis of the female characters in O jardim das espumas (Luiz Rosemberg Filho, 1970), highlighting the film's affiliation to the science fiction genre by combining aspects of the history of women in the period of the Brazilian dictatorship (Sarti, 2001) with the aesthetic developments in the film (Bordwell, 2013), questioning how the use of women's bodies can help to understand the body as discourse (Williams, 1991). The hypothesis is that these characters can be inscribed in complex power relations, refuting a dichotomous idea that insists on classifying female characters only as holders of action or as completely submitted to something/someone, thus confirming the possibility of constructing them and understand them from a terrain full of nuances.
