Review of Talking pictures: how to watch movies, authored by US film critic Ann Hornaday. The book – originally published in 2017 – gained its first translation/edition in the Brazilian publishing market in 2021, released by Bestseller, from Grupo Record, becoming pedagogically notable as a publication that reveals distinct nuances to the way we watch and attribute value to films. More than a particular and subjective appreciation of film narratives and the way we talk about them, however, Hornaday shows a keen perception concerning the technical/objective aspects of such productions. Thus, the book stands out as a work of interest to students, teachers and researchers, especially in the field of Cinema, Communication and Education, as well as to cinephiles and those who are curious about the seventh art.
