The present work intends to explore the term acid western, used to categorize a small group of examples of the western genre with certain thematic and stylistic affinities. From the notions of Rick Altman and Jim Kitses about the western as a cinematographic genre and the concept of acid western, outlined and later elaborated by the critics Pauline Kael and Jonathan Rosenbaum, respectively, our intention will be to investigate, from the filmic corpus selected, what characteristics could significantly unite such films, beyond the simple illustrative adjective.
