Abstract

This article aims to present data on the production of Brazilian documentaries about samba (from the database of the Agência Nacional do Cinema, Portal Filme B and the Cinemateca Nacional) in order to discuss two samba long-length documentaries in particular. O mistério do samba (Carolina Jabor and Lula Buarque de Hollanda, 2008) and O samba que mora em mim (Georgia Guerra-Peixe, 2012) deal with characters and places historically associated with this discussion: the Velha Guarda da Portela, in the suburbs of Oswaldo Cruz, and the residents of Morro da Mangueira, respectively. Questions about the relationship established between who films and who is filmed are the core of this article, which aims to shed light on the debate surrounding the documentary production about samba in Brazil.
